FAQ

What is a membrane?

A membrane is a material used in construction to improve a building's performance (watertightness ; temperature regulation ; wind resistant) . It often takes the form of a film or flexible material to be laid on a surface.

There are many types of membranes that can be used for different applications:

  • In roofing, for example, a waterproof membrane can be used to create thermal insulation, block UV radiation or to combat condensation. Membranes have a number of names, such as "roof underlayment", "vapour barrier", "waterproof membrane" etc.
  • When constructing a building, membranes are also used to protect foundations and underground walls.
